The RWSD Project is using the “Total Commander” as a very efficient file manager, with 2 parallel windows, powerful packing/unpacking facilities etc. Total Commander is also very useful as FTP client to connect with remote FTP servers.
However, it is not suitable for connecting to the server www.disk-world.de, as this server uses SFTP which is a “secure FTP” with more advanced settings. I had been using another shareprogram for that purpose FTP Voyager from Rhinosoft. After two years of the initial subscription I had been asked to pay again in order to install program updates – a price policy very different from Total Commander.
Now I switched from Shareware to Opensource. Filezilla is free and I have the impression even more stable than FTP voyager. It is perhaps optically less appealing, but definitely very clear, functional and easy to use. I have been using version 2.2.14 which is very stable; the current version is 2.2.16. I use Filezilla both at AHT (within the company network) as well as travelling abroad and can recommend it fully.

Access to the weblog appears to be stable now. I just tested it from another PC (without my passwords stored in a cookie) and it worked without a problem.

08/05: Official Launch
By April 2004 the database had grown that much, that we dared to launch it officially. This brought the database into the public.
Launch at Golden Tulip Hotel
But already at that time, the concept of a web based information system had been explored and found feasible.

08/05: This was how it started
In year 2001 we started a database on rural water supply schemes using MS-Access with a MapObjects plug-in for basic GIS functionality (i.e. dynamic data visualisation and spatial selection).

At that time, we were not even thinking about a web application - that was only years later!
