Working Visit to UNEP Headquarters in Nairobi

The LCBC Executive Secretary was at the head of a mission to UNEP Headquarters in Nairobi where several meetings were held with officials of various divisions. The aim was to identify priority areas where UNEP's support and assistance may be needed.

The following 6 (six) priority areas were unanimously identified:

• Stakes in Remote Sensing, monitoring and early warning system;
• Evaluating and updating the Convention that established LCBC in 1964 and subsequent development, harmonization and reinforcement of pertinent national legal frameworks for the application of the LCBC Convention;
• Sewer management and its impact on groundwater resources in the LCBC Conventional Basin;
• Management of wetlands, protected areas and national parks;
• Stakes in land degradation, including desertification and drought;
• Initiating cooperation ties with the Government of Israel concerning the Exchange Forum on Lake Chad Basin management.

Moreover, after being informed of the Project for the Promotion of the Use of Renewable Energy Resources and Conservation of Flora Species in the Dry Lands of "Mega-Chad", financed by Belgian cooperation, the LCBC expressed its desire to be closely involved in its implementation as coordinator of all regional projects in the Lake Chad Conventional Basin. A workshop was scheduled for N'Djamena to study the various aspects of this project.
