Reversal of Land and Water Degradation Trends in the Lake Chad Basin

The Project "Reversal of Land and Water Degradation Trends in the Lake Chad Basin" covers the conventional basin of Lake Chad.

Objective of Project

The project has three main purposes:

  1. To overcome barriers to the concerted management of the basin through enhanced collaboration and capacity building among riparians and stakeholders;
  2. To carry out a trans-boundary diagnostic analysis and prepare a descriptive framework for the concerted water management across the basin;
  3. To prepare a Strategic Action Plan (SAP) with the support of GEF for a long term implementation of priority actions to address trans-boundary issues.

The project will be funded by GEF with co-financing by UNDP, LCBC, Member States and BMZ.

The project will be executed by UNDP/UNDESA for 4 years.

Expected Results:

  1. Project mechanisms put in place: a programme coordination unit and lead agencies to drive and coordinate TDA completion, pilot projects, policy initiatives and institutional linkages.
  2. Enhanced regional policy initiatives and institutional mechanisms to address Trans-boundary issues.
  3. Strengthened participation of stakeholders.
  4. A completed TDA and a synthetic framework for concerted management of the basin.
  5. Demonstration projects to test and validate methodologies, stakeholder involvement and implementation modalities.
